Happy Visual Studio Birthday

On November 10, 1775, an act of the Continental Congress declared "That two Battalions of Marines be raised…". Today they are known as the Marine Corps, and every November 10th the Marine Corps celebrates their Marine birthday with a reading from the Marine Corps manual, a birthday message from the Commandant, and other festivities as well as greetings and good wishes among Marines.

Most Visual Studio developers have not fought on the enemy's battlefield with bullets and blood. For those that have in the 232 years of the Marine Corps, I offer my deepest respect and sincerest appreciation.

On March 19, 1997, Visual Studio 97 was released to the public and thus began a new era of software development. In like manner to the Marines, on this March 19th I would like to wish all of my fellow Visual Studio developers a happy 11th Visual Studio birthday.

Further, I suggest a Visual Studio birthday tradition. First, Scott Guthrie, corporate vice president of the .NET Developer Platform at Microsoft, should deliver a birthday message. Second, we should each read the Visual Studio 97 mission to help remind us of our legacy and what our ambition should be:

In looking to build high-quality tools, Microsoft listened to customers, each clamoring for tighter integration across the myriad of utilities, tools, servers, and platform features they required. Visual Studio 97 enabled development teams to share in large-scale projects across the entire development life cycle, even when mixing components of various languages and using various deployment architectures such as the Internet, Microsoft Windows, and, increasingly, mobile devices.

Happy Birthday!

[Updated: 3/20/2008]

I made a note in the comments, but I wanted to make sure I clarified my post.  I am in no way making any sort of comparison between Microsoft and Visual Studio, and the United States Marine Corps.  I am also not in any way trying to suggest that software developers do anything nearly as courageous or selfless as that of the US Marine Corps.  I am simply trying to make reference to the camaraderie of the Marines, and how we might introduce some of their 'community spirit' into our own software development community.

@Comment #2 - I am not in any way trying to suggest that software developers do anything nearly as courageous or selfless and that of the US Marine Corps.

@Joe - I think the logistics of shipping cake to all of the registered Visual Studio owners would outweigh any potential sugar fix <g>.  But maybe within the Microsoft office?

@Michael - Haha, I like the humor, but I am also genetically predisposed to bad humor.

@Gus - I have never seen a reference to Visual Studio 2, and [your favorite search engine] seems to not be aware of it either.  Do you have a reference you can share?

March 20, 2008 7:17 AM

Isn't Visual Studio older than that? I attended a SD conference in 1992 where MS handed out t-shirts with a "Visualize You Masterpiece" logo. I thought that was the first Visual Studio, but I used Borland tools so I didn't pay much attention.

Uh, Visual Studio release 1 came out long before 1997.  Shouldn't that be the BIRTH day to celebrate.

Hey cool! Nov 10th is my birthday!

Well, I remember being disappointed with Visual C++ came out, expecting it to be a Rad-tool like Visual Basic was. The name is still pretty misleading.

But, I have to admit, it's a pretty solid IDE--I use it everyday. It might very well be the best product MS ever came out with.

March 20, 2008 9:36 AM

Happy Birthday Visual Studio!!

March 20, 2008 9:47 AM

<I love Visual C++ just as a girlfriend.>

Great analogy!

Yes they are both likely to end up with you being dumped!

Not sure what sex VS is, but I’m pretty convinced its female Why?

It requires me to be attentive at all times

It’s often irrational

It plays around with other software engineers

Its pretty high maintenance

Keeps giving me hints at what I’ve done wrong

It keeps changing its look

If it was male

It would be robust and solid

Never be irrational

Have a sports feed ticker built in

Know how to order pizza

Compiler Output window would be less polite

Wouldn’t care about its looks

March 20, 2008 9:47 AM

What does a criminal force that invades other countries have to do with VS?

Here's something from Smedley Butler, who you would consider to be a "real" Marine.

Hopefully as a software developer you have enough brains to be open minded and consider what he wrote, someone who the elite tried to hire to overthrow FDR.

War Is A Racket.

I think what it is (and it seems to be supported from the article you reference) is that there was Visual Basic, Visual C++, Visual Doodad #3, etc., before Visual Studio 97; but Visual Studio 97 was the first to integrate all these independent Visual languages into one integrated Visual.... um, Studio.  "E pluribus unum," as the dollar bill says: "From many, one."

"For those that have in the 232 years of the Marine Corps, I offer my deepest respect and sincerest appreciation. "

I remember Pete and Chucky and Pramod in particular, for the valor and fortitude that they demonstrated in the face of overwhelming odds. I am able to type these words today because of the stand that they made, those many years ago.

Thank you very, very much for your kind thoughts and warmest regards to all jar-heads who may read these words.
