I've got the similar error.

My workaround:

define VsTemplateLanguage property in the project file, as far as I understand this property must contain the same value as ProjectType property in the .vstemplate file.

Here are snippet from my project, which contains .vstemplate file:

<TargetRegistryRoot>Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\8.0Exp</TargetRegistryRoot>

In this case deployment path for project items is Common7\IDE\ItemTemplatesExp\CSharp. I believe "Exp" suffix means "experimental", so if value of the TargetRegistryRoot will be Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\8.0 items will be deployed in Common7\IDE\ItemTemplates\CSharp.

I am trying to do just this, only also allow everyone in the community to be able to add an event at any time to the calendar.

Do you know if this is possible?? Also, is it possible to do with a simple interface not constrained to the forum? Or in other words.... so simple that it requires only a button-click for the non-tech savey? (right now we have a calendar on our site that requires us to enter the date in a forum post for that post to show up on the calendar... it be nice to have something separate that just works well for people without having to remember the coding process of how to type it in)

Hope that wasn't too much.... Please help if you can.

Great Presentation, thanks! Two addtional tips, or addendums to existing tips.

1. Instead of turning off the start page, you can actually change the RSS feed that is used on the start page, since that it all that it is. If you replace it with a custom RSS feed, you can use it to publish or communicate information out to your development team. (Don't know why I never thought of that before!)

2. Here is what I have setup in a batch to clear my VS file and project list (I review a lot of apps, so it gets cluttered up reguraly)

ClearVS.cmd:

regedit -s VS2005FileMRUDelete.reg

regedit -s VS2005ProjectMRUDelete.reg

regedit -s VS2005FileMRUAdd.reg

regedit -s VS2005ProjectMRUAdd.reg

I find it is easier to simply delete and re-add the key like this:

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\8.0\ProjectMRUList]

and

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\8.0\ProjectMRUList]

as an example. Putting the dash in front of the key deletes it.

FYI, you could have used:

and avoided the IL.

Too bad that the only objects that will com across have to be serializable.

I worked on it some more and I've got it working.  Believe it or not.

I have a custom VisualizerObjectSource that uses CoMarshalInterThreadInterfaceInStream() to serialize the System.__ComObject and my custom DialogDebuggerVisualizer uses CoGetInterfaceAndReleaseStream() to deserialize it back to System.__ComObject.

That definitely sucks.  I too have won many prizes at local user groups and even picked up something from a recent code camp.  I too would have declined the prize as it really takes away from the whole "free" aspect.

I think you should forward along the message from the vendor to the code camp organizer so they can contact them directly, and possibly not deal with them in the future.

Hi Steve:

let me first apologize for this mess. I hear your complaint loud and clear. This is definitely not what I had in mind when I agreed to the plan that my Marketing group wanted to do software give-aways at user group events.

Let me explain a few things that came together to make this such an unfortunate situation for you and us:

 (a) our Marketing folks should have known better from the start and offered software licenses with a value of less than $600 (which is what we'll do in the future);

 (b) we really have no choice with respect to the value of the software, as Altova, Inc. is a reseller and so our cost is very close to the retail price of the software - furthermore our CPAs have advised that we need to make the 1099 out for the retail price of the product (it's similar to what happens if you win a car in any sweepstakes - you end up owing taxes on the value of the car);

 (c) we should have done a better job of communicating with you the other option: if you did not want the 1099, we would gladly proivde you with a software license for a different Altova product valued at less than $600 - and that offer still stands.

In the future I will make sure that we will do a better job wih software license give-aways at user groups.

My co-worker won SQL Server 2000 enterprise edition at a local user group and never got a 1099.

Yeah, I was late getting to the contest but I think that I hit a home run ;-) with my answer.

Regarding the Type information, you'll need to do some research on IDispatch & ITypeInfo.  If the underlying COM object supports IDispatch, you can get everything you need from there.

Any chance you will post more details on how to build the Event Calendar functionality for CS?  Your solution here looks pretty clean.  I really need this functionality on a site I'm hosting and would rather not recreate the wheel since you've already done it.

Maybe you can package it up as an official add on for CS.

Do you have any plans to post this as an Add-In for CS?  Your calendar looks really good.  i've not found any other option that is as nice as yours and I definately don't have the time to build this myself.

Brian, thank you for your patience.  The next section on security is the probably the hardest section to write.  On the surface, security seems pretty simple.  Just set up some groups, add users to the groups, and off you go.  In reality, things are almost never that simple.  It took me awhile to get my thoughts on this topic down on virtual paper; hopefully the next sections will be released faster.

Isn't Visual Studio older than that? I attended a SD conference in 1992 where MS handed out t-shirts with a "Visualize You Masterpiece" logo. I thought that was the first Visual Studio, but I used Borland tools so I didn't pay much attention.

Uh, Visual Studio release 1 came out long before 1997.  Shouldn't that be the BIRTH day to celebrate.

My project is in 2005 and I can't find that item in the menu.

Oh, just got it! I have to select the form, not any other control. Once the form is selected the tab order item in the menu appears.

Now I just have to figure it out how does it really works (4.5.15.1 is not a very intuitive tab order, and less if the next control says 4.5.6)

I'm looking for whether it's the truth that a mixed-mode application(in my case, App.exe is written in C#, with a pure-native C++ compiled as DLL) can be set a data breakpoint. I failed to do this in the VS2008 IDE, receiving the error message as :

Data breakpoints are not supported in the Common Language Runtime.

is it supported for my mixed-mode case?

Somewhere in there you should state that it must be a *valid, working* assembly that you can run :)

And given that, wouldn't this contest be impossible? In order for a .NET assembly to work, it must contain valid IL. Once you have valid IL, you can get it into whatever language you want.

If you want to add a reference to an assembly in the GAC, you don't have to go through all that. SharpDev will allow you to add a reference to the assembly from Add Reference.

When renaming the folder used by a project, if other projects had references to the project being renamed, then I found that I also needed to manually modify the csproj files of those other projects to change the path of the project reference.

Devenv doesn't seem to exist on my computer.  Help anyone?

Sorry if I bothered anybody.  I just figuered out how to reset Visual Web Developer 2008 express edition.  I used "Tools/Import and Export Settings..." and then I reset everything to the defaults.

I was under the impression most power users/developers wouldn't use the quick launch bar at all. Once you get past a few icons, it becomes less useable.

I use Launchy.

Using Team Foundation Server 2008 related dlls.

I am getting error as "Unable to connect remote server" with following code. any help is much appericated.

I tried with http, https, and used my system name instead of localhost.

on 64 bit systems, you need to add your assembly folder to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\.NETFramework\AssemblyFolders] (HKEY_CURRENT_USER resp.) instead to make this work.

Actually it doesn't fit well in smaller screen either :)

Repositories work well with LINQ to SQL. Keep in mind that challenges arise when trying to do different parts of the CRUD on different contexts. Additionally, you need to take care to use the same context working with both parent and child of a parent/child relationship, otherwise updatess may have undesirable results.

The only criticism I would have in this code is in the LoadAllByQuery. Your implementation only really allows for adding a Where clause. You may want to consider a more flexible option taking a full expression.

Very nice tip. In case you are sensetive about keeping single copy of single resource this article is a perfect help. I was looking for the same problem and trick mentioned above worked for me.

Where are you storing your single and plural text? Do you have an algorithm to pluralize a singular word? If so, it must be pretty smart :)

That last method looks like a Reflector decompile... especially:

  string key = Convert.ToString((string)pair1.Key, CultureInfo.InvariantCulture);

Clearly, that's just:

 string key = (string)pair1.Key;

I would also worry that attribute values could sometimes be things that should be rendered in CurrentCulture.

Here's an interesting problem.  The move command is disabled on all of my visual studio dialog boxes.  I can't drag the around etc.

The reset window layout command didn't fix this.  

Rune, The problem I found with the slothonline method is that it automatically sorts the enum by it's value.  Is there a method as easy as that, that will keep the enum in the physical order you have it in the code?

Interesting conversation.  As one of the organizers of Philly.Net Code Camp (hey, it is coming up this Saturday April 18 - http://www.phillydotnet.org), I can say that our leadership team debates this as well.  

In the past, we have tried several formats for our "Speaker Party" including sit-down dinner, appetizers and drinks at a bar, and even one at our UG leader's house.  This year we are doing something that I have advocated for years - opening up the party to everyone at Code Camp.  So it is an after party, not a speaker party.  As Steve said in his comments, we are giving drink coupons to speakers.  The speakers deserve a "little something" for their effort and the organizers and speakers like to relax and hang out together after the event.  But this is a great opportunity to build our community by allowing all attendees to come and hang out, network or whatever.  The key word here is "community" and we want to continue to grow ours.

Implementing MVC in win forms, or better yet one of the MVPs like passive view is fairly trivial, and for me at least a standard recommended practice. I am not so sure a framework for it is either helpful or required. POCOs and YAGNI ftw!

Can you clear up what advantages an MVC framework for win forms has over simply using it as a pattern?

Wow, I'm almost left speechless. I remember when MSFT was forced to ship Windows without a DVD codec included.  After my dad upgraded it was impossible to convey the alleged increase of freedom that he had by being able to choose his own DVD codec.

Ahem. May I remind you that Microsoft on its own initiative has made Windows 7 in the EU browserless? This is not what the EU wanted - the EU has suggested a "ballot window" where you can select which browser(s) you wish to install when you get a new machine with Windows on it.

What MS has done is try to push the "blame" for this stupid decision onto the European Union and its commision. Which is plain wrong. This is MS acting childishly.

This is my first time comment at your blog.

Good recommended website.

The main issue is of course another one (at least for the EU) they don't want MS to push out all other browsers and the charge a lot for theit own... kind a like what happened with works/Word pushing out other party's like wordstar and wordperfect...

now we need to pay a lot for a product without any serious competion in the word proccesing area... BTW don't call open office a serious competetor please...

Hi Steve,

Yeah this is a great tip that never really made it out of the release notes to common knowledge.  Thanks for publishing this.  There is one tip I would like to give though and I talked to Phil about this back in January, but it never made it in to the final release.  The actual path you want to use for the compile is not:

$(ProjectDir)\..\$(ProjectName)

it should just simply be

$(ProjectDir)

And I will tell you why.  The first one doesn't work if your assembly isn't named the same as your project.  The second one works every time and it probably isn't publicized all that much because of this bug, which is very easy to fix.  I know why this happened internally with in the MVC team, and it should have been fixed before the release, but these things happen sometimes.

i assume that this has to have an empty body:

Thanks for the good article. However, from what I've read about creating Custom MSBuild tasks which invoke an exe, it is better to derive from the ToolTask abstract class. This provides the framework necessary for the MSBuild task to call external processes.

It exists, but is called by the less than immediately apparent name "Aggregate" (took me a while to find it, too! -- I was looking for Fold or FoldL)

It comes in three different overloads.  to allow an initial value and type transformation as well the basic version as above.  See

msdn.microsoft.com/.../system.linq.enumerable.aggregate.aspx

This looks like the Aggregate(...) method already provided in LINQ - not one of the well known LINQ extension methods.

There are two things you can do to address the issues you've listed:

1. You could put the logic in the BeforeBuild target in the project file, this way it will always be executed even if nothing has changed (I think).

If you still want to re-use the target from a central file you could re-define the BeforeBuild target as:

<Target Name="BeforeBuild" DependsOnTargets="ExecuteT4Templates" />

2. You can determine if an ItemGroup contains any elements or not by checking if it's an empty string:

<Exec ... Condition=" '@(T4Templates)' != '' " />

Looking at the IL can be instructive, but really the JIT output is what really counts. I suspect you'll see identical code in the x86 (with optimization JIT enabled)

Thanks Steve.  I learned the hard way this weekend that you can also use the $.ajax function instead of $.post if you expect or need to handle errors on form submit.  Apparently, only "success" is ever sent back to calls made to $.post, even in error cases.

Creating parameterized tests for one. These are hugely useful for tests that have a complexity of testing input (such as any method that parses out a complex deta structure, and you need to test it using multiple inputs)

More importantly, and slightly on a bigger level, the use of hierarchical tests. In other words, a test that for it to pass, it means sub-tests need to pass.

This notion would allow for a BDD approach of specifying a testable requirement, but allowing for the specifications of what it means for that requirement to be met using multiple other tests. For example, you could have a "ShouldProcessAnOrder" test, which has three sub-tests "WhenProcessingAnOrder_ShouldVerifyPaymentDetails", "WhenProcessingAnOrder_ShouldSendOfAnOrderEmail", and "WhenProcessingAnOrder_ShouldLogOrderRequest".

AHH!!    Thanks!!   All I had to do was find the shortcut to my window (Error List CTRL + V, E) and it showed its little head.  Who the heck moved it way down there anyway?  I have two monitors and the rightmost stays full-streen Visual Studio.  It showed up on the right screen with only the titlebar visible at the bottom.  I didn't put it there!!...right?

Wow, it is really annoying that VS does not look at the GAC for the 'Add References' dialog.  I was hoping to use the GAC to help with sharing of common assemblies for developers, guess not...   Good article, short and sweet!

But I think you have the names mixed up, as the others have suggested.

- ReplaceOptionsPageProvider should be SubstituteBaseUserControlProvider.  When using Steve's code, you can rename this to what you like.

- BaseOptionsPage should be BaseUserControl.  When using Steve's code, replace this with the name of your abstract base class.

- ReplaceForm should be StandInUserControl.  When using Steve's code, replace this with the concrete version of BaseUserControl to use when designing.  Or set to UserControl (for speed, or when your abstract control affects internal behaviour rather than visible behaviour).

I have been using this feature extensively lately. The default settings in VS ends up adding too many new lines for my taste.

Ahh, thank you.  This has always bugged me.  There are so many small issues w/ VS that I could fix if I could just remember to open Tools > Options.

My preference would be for projects to make use of style guidelines/tools that already exist.  So C# projects should be using StyleCop.  The key is to not change the default settings that are installed on the machine, but instead customize them per solution/project.

have caution in windows 7, you need run devenv.exe as administrator, then this works.

I had this problem and i waste many time to find this answer.

If you have some of your ASP.NET projects setup to debug through IIS, don't forget to go to the IIS Manager and change their path entries in the Basic Configuration setting to the new/renamed physical location. Best is to change this before re-opening the changed solution.

You really saved my ass on this one, haha.  Spent a couple hours trying to rename a project until I found this article, and then five minutes later, I'm done.  Thanks a lot!

This is (mostly) another way of saying something that I have been preaching for some time: Code Coverage is only useful as a 'negative metric'.

Which is really to say that you can use code coverage numbers to tell you where you have NO coverage in your tests (and therefore you need to be very worried about that code) but its a complete misreading of the report to say "this code over here has 100% coverage and therefore I can trust it in its entirety".

The binary view of the world that most software developers have makes this a difficult concept to come to terms with, but that merely makes it MORE important for them to understand it :)
